Durable Dragonboard countertops and fireplace surround were a perfect fit for this application. The Perch rests on four steel columns, piercing through existing bungalow walls below to resist lateral forces. Shop-built steel was craned into place to minimally disturb the site, and the cantilevered form gently sways in the wind, a reminder of its construction. Low maintenance Corten siding matches existing site elements, and an open grate with expanded metal staircase is barefoot (and paw) friendly while allowing light to permeate. Pick up your golf ball and club from the folded perforated metal cart and follow the colorful zip tie flags and hole markers throughout the site to guide you to each golf hole. Easy circulation, accessible appliances, fixtures, low storage, and ample knee space at sinks and counters were designed for the client's comfort as well as for her guests or a future able bodied owner. Large sliding doors visually connect this (partially underground) level to the backyard and pool. Her practice (formerly Studio 512) focuses on residential, small commercial, and public art building projects. In 2019 Elle Decor named Nicole one of the greatest living architects in the world, alongside several Pritzker Prize winners. Her projects have received design awards at the local (AIA Austin), state (Texas Society of Architects), national (AIA, RD Magazine) and international (Dezeen, Architizer) levels, and her work has been published in books and magazines including Architectural Record, Dwell, and Texas Architect. She gained early work experience in the NYC offices of Robert A.M. Stern and Peter Eisenman and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Textiles and Apparel from Cornell and a Master of Architecture from Rice. Nicole believes the relationships built with clients, artisans, contractors, and subcontractors along the way are as important as the buildings themselves. She measures success not only by the end product, but also by how we get there.
